short-term and long-term goals with specific technology
solutions. Jerome Berg, SAMPE Past President, Raj
Manchanda, myself and a short list of SAMPE volunteer
leadership, are working on generating an effective plan
that meets the needs of our current membership and
community - As well as those of vertical markets that
could benefit greatly from our society's expertise and
technology depth.
One member of this team is Dr. Clem Hiel, FSAMPE, who
has extensive international composites experience across
numerous materials and manufacturing technologies. He
recently sent me information regarding global composites
market information that I know few have ever seen. For
example, some of the facts he shared indicate that we may
be missing, or overlooking certain material facts such as:
* SAMPE has four (4) major regions as fully recognized
chapters: China, Europe, Japan, and North America. With
others not nearly as large but emerging: Australia, Brazil,
South Korea, and Taiwan.
* The world recognizes the Global Composites Market as
the following major 5 regions:
o North America o Europe
o Asia Pacific
o South America
o Middle East & Africa
* Interestingly, the world Global Composites Markets
are all essentially equal in size and show great growth
through 2027. However, while SAMPE markets currently
are made up of technology products primarily using
high-performance fibers and resins, the recognized
Global Composites Markets consist extensively of lower
grade fibers (E-glass, C-glass) and resins (polyester, vinyl
ester, etc.). And - the number of metric tons significantly
outweighs traditional advanced, high-performance
materials by large factors.
* In fact, compared within the five major World Composites
Markets - North America comes in low at #4, only slightly
better than the Middle East & Africa regions, primarily
because we are not as engaged with the lower grade
glass fibers and resin systems.
Going forward, in addition to developing a good
strategic plan using the traditional technology roadmap to
establish a reliable global approach to address markets
of interest, we need to fully understand SAMPE's current
membership in order to fully retain them and keep them
engaged. Roughly 85% are from " the industry " and most
are stable members supporting aerospace or higher
tech. HOWEVER - going forward, SAMPE members are
adaptable to changes in opportunities across an industry
that is certainly looking at eVTOL, UAV, UAM, etc. as well as
glass fiber technology while still using necessary design,
structural, testing, inspection, manufacturing, and related
training expertise. The bottom line is this; we cannot forget
our current membership in one specific region as we go
after new markets.

With over 50 years' experience in composite
materials, structures, design/manufacturing
- starting with pioneering work with 1st UK
carbon fibers in 1967. Most notable, his work
resolving propellant grain cracking problem
(1st Stage Minuteman) working with Thiokol
colleagues and Dr. Edward Teller
in
late
1960's. He held 4 US Presidential Appointments as the carbon
fiber industry expert negotiating Export Control rules (Dept.
of Commerce). He is a SAMPE Fellow, SME Jud Hall Award,
SACMA Leadership Award and SAMPE Distinguished Service
Award. He developed " resin infusion " technology, filament
wound COPVs, amusement rides (NASA Space Camp),
underground petrol tanks (Petronas), Arctic drill systems (solid
methane), and pressure vessels for the US Navy/Air Force/
Army and NASA (Filament Wound Case-FWC Program). He
has over 500 publications.
