Discover St. Mary's County - (Page 3)

WHERE THE POTOMAC MEETS THE CHESAPEAkE PENINSULA POWER! Shaped by the Chesapeake Bay and its mighty tributaries, the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers, the St. Mary’s Peninsula has fostered a traditional lifestyle anchored in the natural bounty of the Tidewater, all just a short drive south of Washington, DC, Baltimore and Annapolis. WELCOME TO OUR NEW WORLD! This is the state’s birthplace! You’ll discover sites brimming with colonial history starting with St. Clement’s Island where colonists first landed and Historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland’s first capital. Not far from that 17th-century “city” stands the grand lady of 18th-century Maryland, Sotterley Plantation. MAKE MINE MARITIME! St. Mary’s claims four lighthouses, including Piney Point Lighthouse, the oldest on the Potomac. The newest lighthouse, Blackistone Lighthouse, has been lovingly reconstructed on St. Clement’s Island. St. George Island retains the flavor of a fishing community and you’ll find marinas and charter boats at the peninsula’s tip--where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake. WE’VE GOT THE RIGHT STUFF! The county’s strategic Bay location has given it a rich military history stretching back to the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Point Lookout State Park has a significant Civil War history as a prison camp for Confederate soldiers. The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum illuminates the area’s importance as the center for naval aviation technology and testing. This is where the nation’s first astronauts learned to fly high above the Bay as “Right Stuff” test pilots. TRY A TOWN, TRY A TRAIL. Historic Leonardtown on Breton Bay boasts a waterfront park, winery and great places to dine and shop. Water trails are abundant, but if you prefer to explore on firmer ground, cycle the Potomac Heritage Trail, or drive the Religious Freedom National Scenic Byway or the Barnwood and Beach Glass Trail of artists’ studios and farms. Back roads lead to bucolic Amish homesteads and big-time motor sports venues including Maryland International Raceway. OUR WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER! Enjoy fabulous festivals including the Potomac Jazz and Seafood Festival and the seven-week River Concert Series. Sample wines at the Riverside Winefest, and oysters at the Oyster Festival, where the fastest oyster shuckers in the U.S. compete for the national title.
