Yea B oth Union Pacific (UP) and Canadian National Railway (CN) have key roles in the North American railway infrastructure, and SCOA has been helping to keep these railways supplied with rails and more since the 1980s. Fostering this strong relationship, Union Pacific is currently one of SCOA’s Steel & Non-Ferrous Metal Group’s most important customers. The SCOA/UP relationship marked a milestone in 2010 when Nippon Steel , now referred to as Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, celebrated 25 years of continuous rail supply to UP. As part of the Union Pacific business, SCOA supplies not just their rails and wheels from them but also tie plates from Arkansas Steel. This area of rail supply, which began in 1984, now regularly surpasses 100,000 tons of delivered product annually, and has accumulated more than 1.64 million tons of delivered supplies over the course of nearly three decades. Tomomichi Ishikawa, Product Manager for Rail Business in SCOA’s Steel and Non-Ferrous Metal Group, said that the relationship with Union Pacific began with 30 tons of sample materials that were supplied in 1984, marking the beginning of a longstanding bond of trust between companies. “The secret to our longevity with this business connection is mutual trust; reliable quality, delivery, performance, and services; and regular technical discussions and communications,” Ishikawa said, “and the greatest of these valuable elements is trust.” Brian Lambert,Vice President and General Manager of the Montreal Office, said that the Nippon Steel relationship connection with the Canadian National Railway (CN) actually pre-dates the Union Pacific connection. “Nippon Steel Corporation — now Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation — is the leading manufacturer of high quality rail in Japan and our client, Canadian National Railway, is Canada’s largest railway,” Lambert said. Lambert said that from the first supply of 5,000 net tons in 1981, SCOA and Sumitomo Canada have supplied enough rail to CN that, if laid end to end, could stretch from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, although he is quick to point out that this has not been a process without challenges. 4 v i s i o n s F a l l 2 0 1 2
