for the Transit Industry
M

efficient, cost effective, environmentally sound transportation options,
and North America continues to balance population growth with
sustainable transportation solutions for its infrastructure. With a diversified
product line and clean technologies to supply the growth of the nation's
transportation infrastructure, our company and its partners are creating jobs
and bringing value-added products and services to this growing industry.

Sumitomo Corporation has over 50 years of
global contract management experience in
bringing state-of-the-art transportation systems
to the market. As a prime contractor in the
U.S., we have developed, managed and
delivered transit equipment for Chicago's
Metra, the Northern Indiana Commuter
Transportation District, the Maryland Transit
Administration, California Department of
Transportation, Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers
Board, Los Angeles County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority, and the Virginia
Railway Express.Together with our partner
Nippon Sharyo, we have supplied over 900
passenger rail cars in the North American
market since the 1980s.

In 2012, Sumitomo Corporation of America
(SCOA) and Nippon Sharyo won a $352
million contract from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) on behalf
of Caltrans and the Illinois Department of
Transportation (IDOT), which represents the
Midwest Coalition (the States of Illinois,
Michigan, and Missouri). This contract is
unique in that it was the first high speed rail
vehicle procurement under the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,
and is a multi-state, multi-municipality
procurement contract.
Hideyuki "Hugh" Ninomiya, a director
in the Transportation Unit of SCOA's
Machinery & Power Business Group,
explains "As transit authorities look to incorporate more sustainable clean technologies,
SCOA has led the way in promoting major
advancements in diesel engines, fuels and
emissions control technology."
For sustainable transportation needs, our
Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) is more
environmentally-friendly than locomotivehauled passenger trains. It offers a quick,
cost-effective solution for authorities looking
to provide mass transit in their community,
but have limited funds for the infrastructure
needed for electrified rail.
