How does SCOA's Aerospace business contribute
to the company's integrated corporate strength?

One true asset is that this developing technology is
not just for aerospace and defense, but can be applied
to multiple industries. That's one of the strengths
of Sumitomo Corporation of Americas; we are covering
diverse industries with multi-group efforts. The businesses may not be the same, but we can work together
to develop the same program technology. One of our
goals is to create value, so through our collaboration
with other business groups, we can stimulate new value
creation, which is part of the vision of Sumitomo.
What do you personally like about being involved in
the space business?
SCOA has been in the space business for decades, and
I'm proud to be a part of it. The exploration of space
is a history of challenges of human beings reaching
beyond countries, and it is quite exciting that we
can currently contribute through our businesses. I
was born in 1969, which is the year of the Apollo 11
mission and Neil Armstrong landing on the moon for the
first time in history. Now we are facing a new space
era, back to the moon and on to Mars. I believe there
will be another new endeavor when Sumitomo Corporation
celebrates its "next" century anniversary [Sumitomo
Corporation is celebrating its first century anniversary this year].
Does it seem strange to be talking about air taxis?
The air taxi is not a dream anymore. It is a real
concept. We are working with Bell and we are promoting
their technology in the Japanese market. The prototypes are being built, and we are not that far from
launch. The air mobility services will launch within
the next five to ten years. The technology is there,
but again, you need to integrate several pieces to establish an air mobility system. There are pieces that
have to fit together - the air vehicle, the logistics,
the infrastructure and the traffic management system -
and we want to function within that paradigm to aid in
this integration. That is how we want to contribute.
