Key Words—PGY1, preceptor development, residency training Hosp Pharm—2012;47(11):845–847 o strategically focus efforts related to preceptor development, it is critical to understand the importance of conducting a programmatic needs assessment. The American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) publishes residency accreditation standards that provide a framework for ensuring that residency programs meet common baseline requirements. The ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) paragraph 4.3 specifically relates to preceptor development,1 stating that the residency program director will devise and implement a plan for assessing and improving the quality of preceptor instruction. Even though preceptor development is a critical component in providing a quality residency program, the standard does not provide specific direction to residency program directors (RPDs) on how to accomplish preceptor development. As RPDs consider how to comply with this accreditation standard, it is important that they consider what meaningful compliance might look like. The goals of this article are to discuss preceptor development challenges, describe the development of a preceptor plan based on a needs assessment, and discuss strategies to enhance preceptor development activities. In 2009, the University HealthSystem Consortium conducted a survey of academic medical center RPDs T to identify the most challenging preceptor-related issues.2 The results are ranked in Table 1. These results highlight the wide array of challenges that preceptors face. It also provides a few specific areas for RPDs to focus on as they begin to consider their preceptor development plan. PRECEPTOR DEVELOPMENT PLAN Assessing Needs The first step in creating a preceptor development plan is to assess the needs of the individual program. Each residency program has unique strengths and weaknesses. Although the survey results in Table 1 can be useful, they may reflect only the general challenges faced day to day in any given residency program. Tools that RPDs can use to identify program-specific challenges include electronic surveys or round table discussions with preceptors. Either format will allow the RPDs to solicit feedback from preceptors. Preceptors can be asked open-ended questions, such as ‘‘What challenges do you feel are the most pressing as a preceptor?’’ The program director can also give preceptors a predetermined list of challenges and ask them to rank their challenges in order of most to least challenging. This approach is useful in that it allows responses to be easily analyzed and standardized.
