The sun is blaring and there’s no better place to be than down by the water. Pack a bottle from one of these wineries before you head to the beach house, the boat or just the shore of the local lake; whether you want a refreshing quaff or a match for the day’s catch, you’ll ﬁnd a wealth of well-priced options here. By the Water There’s something about the sunny, fruit-forward ﬂavors of the wines from Acrobat that seems particularly designed for summer drinking. The entry-level brand from King Estate, drawn from mostly Willamette Valley sources, Acrobat wines are just a little juicier and more approachable than King’s more ambitious bottlings—and priced for picking up by the case on the way to the beach house. The gris is ready to sip between volleys at a beach ball game; the pinot noir—both red and rosé—are fresh and generous. Chill in the surf for refreshment on their own or with grilled ﬁsh. —P.J.C. 2011 Oregon Pinot Gris (89 pts., $12, 12/12) 2011 Oregon Pinot Noir (88 pts., $18, 6/13) King Estate Winery, Eugene, OR Between the gentle breezes and beating sun, a day on the shore of one of New York’s Finger Lakes can be much warmer than a day at Jones Beach. Fortunately, this is one of the country’s great regions for white wine. Anthony Road, a 23-year-old winery on the western shores of Seneca Lake, stood out this year for the pure versatility of its portfolio: In addition to the estimable riesling bottlings they’ve long been known for, the Martini family put out a lean, brisk 2010 Pinot Gris, refreshing in its lemony scent and tart apple ﬂavors, as well as a bright, clean rosé that’s ideal for a June afternoon at the lake. —P.J.C. 2010 Finger Lakes Pinot Gris (90 pts., $13, 8/12) 2011 Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc Rosé (89 pts., $13, 8/12) Anthony Road Wine Co., Penn Yan, NY 40 WINE & SPIRITS JUNE 2013 The Glenora winery and inn are located on the southwest corner of New York’s Seneca Lake. Maybe it’s just the power of suggestion, but these do seem like perfect lakeside wines. The 2011 Pinot Noir Rosé, brisk and watermelony, would be refreshing following an afternoon of waterskiing. If you end up at the end of the dock with a ﬁshing pole, some pan-fried perch would cozy up to the 2011 Chardonnay. And if nothing is biting, the rich yet snappy 2010 Riesling will do wonders for grilled pork sausages. —L.S. 2010 Finger Lakes Riesling (91 pts., $16, 8/12) 2011 Finger Lakes Pinot Noir Rosé (89 pts., $14, 8/12) Glenora Wine Cellars, Dundee, NY While Lamoreaux Landing’s Finger Lakes rieslings may be inexpensive, they’re serious wines—estate-grown on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake and tremendously versatile. Both the 2011 Dry and Semi-Dry would make ideal beach towel aperitifs, and if you happen to be in the Caribbean, they’d be amazing with a ﬁsh curry. Once swimming season is over, though, they’re still rich enough for heartier fare like takeout noodles with pork or veal piccata.
