It is possible to find various definitions of hope. At its most
basic level, hope is an optimistic state of mind. It includes an
expectation that somehow, someway, things will work out alright,
or perhaps even better than that. Perhaps they will work out for our benefit and the
benefit of others! That is a great frame of mind. Have you ever encountered someone
that had lost hope? Has this ever happened to you? Was there a loss of hope in
something specific, like a relationship, or a loss of hope in life? The opposite of hope is
commonly considered despair. At Samaritan Center, we do encounter despair. Sitting
with someone in their despair is one of the most difficult and sacred things we do in
our work. Yet moments of despair are commonly a part of our human journey. They
can occur with the loss of a loved one or in the experience of a profound collective
tragedy, such as war or famine. At Samaritan, one of our core values is hope. With this
we say, " We believe hope exists even in the most challenging situation. " How can we
do our part to maintain an " ethic of hope? " In part, we can lean on our founding. Over
30 years ago, a small band of faith-focused friends and colleagues were filled with an
unexpected hope, that out of one man's calling, a counseling center could grow and
serve hundreds and even thousands of people in need. And that hope was fulfilled!
And it continues to be fulfilled every day and even in new ways. Samaritan Center has
expanded beyond the counseling rooms to schools and board rooms. And we continue
to envision new means by which we can bring our unique brand of care and concern to
new and pressing issues impacting our cities, towns, neighborhoods, homes, businesses,
and churches. Your partnership with us in this work fills us with fresh hope in the
present and for the future! Thank you for being part of our journey.
