but private label supply has become a recent focus. The growing interest in the sector was reflected in the September 2011 acquisition of leading UK ethnic bread supplier Honeytop Speciality Foods by Aryzta, Zurich, Switzerland. Aryzta paid €91 million for Honeytop, which manufactures flatbreads and specialty bakery items

including naans and tortillas for retailers and food service operators across Europe. It also produces all Sharwood’s (owned by Premier Foods, St Albans, UK) branded naan breads. The company claims to command more than half of the UK private label tortilla market. The Honeytop acquisition is significant because it has allowed Aryzta to fill a hole for ethnic breads in its specialty bakery product portfolio. Honeytop also counts Oak Brook, Illinois, US-based McDonald’s as one of its major flatbread customers, allowing Aryzta to better service this key customer globally. Most likely, large bakery groups not currently active in the ethnic breads segment will be increasingly keen to conduct similar deals, picking off smaller niche players as well as other private label specialists.
