The Trump administration put an additional 25% tariff on
US imports of some cheeses from EU countries in retaliation
for subsidies the EU granted to Airbus. The additional
tariffs were put into place in late 2019 and remained in place
during 2020. Imports of affected varieties were down 33.5%
during 2020. Theoretically, the United States increased
domestic production of these varieties (mostly Italian styles)
to make up for the lower imports, but with fine dining hit
hardest by the pandemic it looks like total demand was
down dramatically and Italian-style cheese production fell
despite the lower imports. The tariffs temporarily have been
suspended by the Biden administration, but with foodservice
recovering, Italian-style cheese production has recovered in
the first quarter of 2021.
Most of the pandemic trends have been reversed in the
first quarter of 2021. Mozzarella and other Italian-style cheese
production is up significantly compared to the first quarter
last year and cream cheese production growth has slowed.
American cheese production, which held up well during
the pandemic, has surged higher in the first quarter. New
American cheese production capacity has come online in the
Upper Midwest, pushing first-quarter cheddar production
up 6.7% and production of other American varieties up 7.8%.
With the increased American-style capacity running strong
and recovering foodservice sales driving Italian-style cheese
production higher, total cheese production growth in the
United States should be strong for 2021.
