We race then we get together to re-tell all of the race highlights and catch up with all that has happened since the last time we met. The last couple of months have been a whirlwind of races. It seems like we have one or two races every weekend compared to 21-years ago when we kick-started Pacific Paddler. This year, I was invited to cover the Catalina Channel Crossing. My paddling friends, Alex and Diane Gonzales from Oxnard, took care of me and a group of paddlers from Molokai. Alex picked us up at LAX, invited us into their home, fed us and made all of the arrangements so that we could experience the race. SCORA asked me to be the Grand Marshal in recognition of Pacific Paddler's work promoting the sport of outrigger canoe paddling. What an honor to be part of a list of honorees which include Duke Kahanamoku, John 'Duke' Wayne, Toots Minvielle, Nappy Napoleon, Bobby and Johnny Puakea, Jimmy Terrel, and Al Ching to name just a few. SCORA put on a first class two-day race with an awards party at the Dunes, second to none. Mahalo Jeff Tanaka, president of SCORA, for the honor, 'Uncle' Bud Hohl for the history, Cheance Adair, and Billy Whitford who drove me around the race course to get the photos. Finally, the last race I covered for this issue was the Pailolo. When looking through the view finder, I usually wish I was in the canoe and not more so than this year's race. There were epic conditions at this year's event. Hawaiian Canoe Club put on a 'must do' race that is growing in popularity. The awards ceremony on Molokai was full of the aloha spirit.
