ten WayS the aShp Foundation iS Shaping the Future now
1. The Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative is a joint effort between the ASHP Foundation and ASHP to proactively engage pharmacists in ensuring the future of health-system pharmacy. A consensus summit will be held in Dallas in November 2010, and demonstration grants will grow out of this initiative. 2. The Leadership Resource Center, which was developed in 2009 and launched in early 2010, will act as an online leadership development opportunity for all health-system pharmacists, regardless of career stage or path. This will help ready pharmacists to step into increasingly demanding leadership roles. 3. The Pain Management Traineeship was revised and will relaunch in 2010 as the Pain and Palliative Care Traineeship. There has always been a strong interest in the pain program, but we are seeing a rise in requests for information related to palliative care. The number of applicants has always exceeded the number of spaces available, so the Foundation decided to expand the program to meet these needs. 4. A Spanish version of My Medicine List™ will be introduced in 2010. First launched in English, this tool helps patients track their medications and keep their health care providers fully informed as to what they are taking. There was a great need for a Spanish version of this list for our nation’s large and growing Spanishspeaking population. 5. We are currently developing the Outsourcing Sterile Products Preparation: Development of Contractor Selection Tools for Pharmacy Leaders, a Web-based tool that can be used by hospitals and health systems to evaluate proposals during the selection of an external organization that would provide parenteral product preparation services. PharMEDium Services, LLC, is funding this project. 6. Special funds have been established to raise money for special areas of interest within the profession: the Gloria Francke Fund (the development of women pharmacists’ leadership capabilities and programs) and the William Zellmer Lecture Fund (an annual leadership lecture). 7. The Foundation will award the Promoting Influenza Prevention grants to two researchers. In light of the H1N1 outbreak in early 2009, this is an important endeavor to encourage front-line vaccination of health care workers and to demonstrate the influence of pharmacists as leaders in this movement. 8. The Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership launched the Community Health Services (CHS) Leadership Webinar Series in early 2010, which will reach out to pharmacy leaders in CHS’s 120 hospitals. Approximately 200 pharmacists per month will be educated. 9. The Research Boot Camp is being offered again this year. This intensive program, which includes an onsite mentoring experience, greatly contributes to the growth of faculty members in schools of pharmacy as competent, experienced researchers. 10. We’ve committed to developing more than 100 future health-system pharmacy leaders through the 2010 Pharmacy Leadership Academy and Pharmacy Leadership Institute. These programs continue to offer intensive training in all aspects of leadership in our profession.
