the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. His hobby is the construction of quality crossword puzzles together with an array of brilliant
people, “Barany’s Crossword Friends.” This puzzle honors the newest
member of the group. Dr. Barany’s puzzles have appeared in the New
York Times, Games, and other publications. See http://tinyurl.com/

Facebook page “Crosswords by George Barany and Friends.”
“Hooked on Bionics,” Dr. Barany’s
crossword puzzle was written in
honor of Arlene Romoff and Better
Hearing and Speech Month. Arlene is
co-founder and past president of the
HLA-New Jersey State Association,
gradually lost her hearing as an adult,
and regained it through the miracle of
cochlear implants. Her popular books
include Hear Again—Back to Life
with a Cochlear Implant (Sterling,
2002) and Listening Closely:
A Journey to Bilateral Hearing
(Charlesbridge/Imagine, 2011). Her
advocacy initiatives have led to unprecedented access in the arts and
at public events, garnering her many awards, including the 2012
HLAA Marcia Dugan Advocacy Award and a Humanitarian Award
bestowed by New York City theater producers for innovating live theater
captioning. Arlene is also an avid crossword solver and opera lover.

Hearing applicants with sensitivity to the needs
of people with hearing loss will be considered.
Ability to work with others is essential. Positive
thinkers with the desire to improve the quality
of life for Florida residents with hearing loss are
encouraged to apply. HLA-FL members may
nominate themselves for board membership
or nominate another Florida HLAA member
(with permission).

What is Required?
The board meets at least three times a year
in locations that vary to provide equitable
geographic access. Members are encouraged
to attend all meetings. Costs of travel are the
members’ responsibility. Members are asked
to take active roles on standing and ad hoc
committees. Meetings are presently held on
Saturdays to accommodate employed members.
Major committee work occurs between board
meetings and is most often transacted by e-mail
or chat room; thus, board members are required
to have e-mail access. Reimbursements of
previously approved expenses on behalf of
HLA-FL are available to trustees upon request.

Application forms are available from Richard
Herring, Chair, HLA-FL Nominating
