INTERNShIPS A lot of colleges offer internship placements, but few offer them in this abundance, at such exciting and varied locations. Maybe that’s because few colleges are this close to not one but three cities booming with research, industry, government, technology, business, art, nonprofit and media organizations and companies. Each year, Hood students earn valuable real-world experience at more than 600 internship sites in Frederick, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Last year, students had positions researching the Underground Railroad at the Maryland Historical Archives, writing for the Frederick News-Post, developing software for Bechtel Corp., assisting constituents in U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett’s (R-Md.) office, meeting with state legislators about the death penalty for Amnesty International, and conducting stem cell research for Gahaga Biosciences, Inc. A Hot 99.5 FM Radio A National Institutes of Health A Smithsonian Institution A Wolf Trap Park for the Performing Arts A National Geographic A National Archives A Ethics and Public Policy Center A National Public Radio A Merrill Lynch Hood undergraduates find internship positions at some 500 sites, including the newsroom of NBC 25. A National Humanities Alliance A The White House Scheduling Office SERvICE Hood’s motto, Corde et Mente et Manu (With Heart and Mind and Hand), expresses the value placed on service by the Hood community. Opportunities abound for students to enhance their studies by engaging in community-based service learning. At the Career Center and Office of Service Learning, student volunteers are matched with local, regional, national and international community service experiences. Hood students who participate in PLEN complete internships and attend seminars and conferences in Washington, D.C., learning from teachers and mentors who are leaders in the federal government and national advocacy groups—women who influence and make public policy within the United States and around the world.
