› Energy Sector Drives Increase in Prices The Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) posted its seventh consecutive monthly gain, increasing by 0.4 percent in November 2009. On an unadjusted basis, the CPI increased 1.8 percent on a year-over-year basis. Core CPI, which measures growth in the overall price level exclusive of the month-to-month fluctuations in volatile food and energy prices, remained unchanged for the October to November comparison. Prices may continue to rise in the near term due to the possibility of stronger inflation as a result of a pick up in economic growth and an accommodative Federal Reserve policy. ei Stacey Harrison, Director of Statistical Operations | sta_harrison@nema.org INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND CAPACITY UTILIZATION Industrial production, manufacturing (Index, 2002 = 100) Percent change, year over year Industrial production, electrical equipment, (Index, 2002 = 100) Percent change, year over year Capacity utilization, manufacturing (percent) Purchasing Managers’ Index (value > 50 indicates expanding economy) CONSTRUCTION Housing starts, single family (millions of units, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Housing starts, multi family (millions of units, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Lodging (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Office (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Commercial (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Healthcare (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Communication (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Electric Power (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year Nonresidential construction, Manufacturing (billions of dollars, SAAR) Percent change, year over year EMPLOYMENT Employment, electrical equipment, NAICS 335 (thousands) Percent change, year over year Unemployment (percent, SA) PRICES AND INTEREST RATES Consumer price index (percent change, prior period) Percent change, year over year Producer price index, finished goods (percent change, prior period) Percent change, year over year Interest rate, 3-month Treasury (constant maturity, annual yield) Interest rate, 10-year Treasury (constant maturity, annual yield) Spread (10-year yield minus 3-month yield) MANUFACTURERS’ SHIPMENTS AND INVENTORIES Value of Shipments: Electric Lighting Equipment (billions of dollars, SA) Percent change, year over year Value of Shipments: Electrical Equipment (billions of dollars, SA) Percent change, year over year Value of Inventories: Electric Lighting Equipment (billions of dollars, SA) Percent change, year over year Value of Inventories: Electrical Equipment (billions of dollars, SA) Percent change, year over year Inventory to Shipment Ratio: Electric Lighting Equipment (SA) Percent change, year over year Inventory to Shipment Ratio: Electrical Equipment (SA) Percent change, year over year SA -- Seasonally Adjusted SAAR -- Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate Sep 2008 105.7 121.9 72.5 43.4 0.549 0.273 36.78 58.432 77.87 39.888 23.398 72.709 65.757 422.6 6.2 0.0 -0.1 1.15 3.69 2.54 1.025 3.501 1.762 5.348 1.719 1.528 421.3 6.6 -0.8 -2.6 0.69 3.81 3.12 1.019 3.427 1.755 5.284 1.722 1.542 Oct 2008 106.0 122.2 72.7 38.7 0.534 0.229 36.577 56.471 76.515 40.218 21.957 74.856 70.985 417.5 6.8 -1.7 -2.7 0.19 3.53 3.34 0.977 3.107 1.743 5.117 1.784 1.647 Nov 2008 103.6 123.6 71.1 36.6 0.457 0.198 35.726 55.790 73.526 40.857 21.984 70.745 70.621 Sep 2009 97.7 -7.5% 110.7 -9.2% 67.6 52.6 0.508 -7.5% 0.078 -71.4% 21.416 -41.8% 36.453 -37.6% 47.641 -38.8% 36.521 -8.4% 20.381 -12.9% 76.955 5.8% 68.327 3.9% 371.8 -12.0% 9.8 0.2 -1.3 -0.6 -4.7 0.12 3.40 3.28 0.983 -4.1% 2.514 -28.2% 1.460 -17.1% 3.846 -28.1% 1.485 -13.6% 1.530 0.1% Oct 2009 97.5 -8.0% 107.8 -11.8% 67.6 55.7 0.472 -11.6% 0.055 -76.0% 20.184 -44.8% 35.644 -36.9% 45.891 -40.0% 36.350 -9.6% 19.317 -12.0% 75.104 0.3% 66.728 -6.0% 368.0 -12.7% 10.2 0.3 -0.2 0.3 -1.9 0.07 3.39 3.32 1.000 -1.9% 2.506 -26.9% 1.436 -18.2% 3.761 -28.8% 1.436 -16.6% 1.501 -2.7% Nov 2009 98.6 -4.9% 104.4 -15.5% 68.4 53.6 0.482 5.5% 0.092 -53.5% 365.2 -12.5% 10.0 0.4 1.9 1.8 2.7 0.05 3.40 3.35
