Dwelling, Identity, and the Maya
RELATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY AT CHUNCHUCMIL
Scott R. Hutson
Contrary to contemporary notions of the self as individual and independent, this book offers a new perspective on the ancient Maya that emphasizes the importance of dwelling as a social practice. Using excavations of ancient Chunchucmil as a case study, it investigates how Maya personhood was structured and transformed in and beyond the domestic sphere and examines the role of the past in the production of contemporary Maya identity. Scott R. Hutson is assistant professor at the University of Kentucky.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL RESOURCES ARCHAEOLOGY SECOND EDITION
Thomas W. Neumann and Robert M. Sanford
Dealing with everything from law to logistics, archival research to zoological analysis, project proposals to report production, the authors provide an invaluable sourcebook for archaeologists who do contract work in the United States. After introducing the legal and ethical aspects of cultural resources management, the authors describe the processes of designing a proposal and contracting for work, doing background research, conducting assessment, testing, mitigation work (Phase I, II, and III), laboratory analysis, and preparing reports for project sponsors. Thomas W. Neumann is an archaeologist at a private firm in Georgia. Robert M. Sanford is professor at the University of Southern Maine.

Fantastic Dreaming
THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF AN ABORIGINAL MISSION
Jane Lydon
Fantastic Dreaming explores how whites have measured Australian Aboriginal people through their material culture and domestic practices, aspects of culture intimately linked to Enlightenment notions of progress and social institutions such as marriage and property. These ideas persist in archaeological analysis that insists on Aboriginality as otherness and difference and equates objects with identity. This study examines the complex role of material culture and spatial politics in shaping colonial identities and offers a critique of essentialism in archaeological interpretation. Jane Lydon is senior research fellow at the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies at Monash University.

Collecting Cultures
MYTH, POLITICS, AND COLLABORATION IN THE 1948 ARNHEM LAND EXPEDITION
Sally K. May
Collecting Cultures draws together diverse strands of evidence to investigate the events and consequences of the 1948 Arnhem Land Expedition. In the wake of the expedition came volumes of scientific publications, kilometers of film, thousands of photographs, tens of thousands of scientific specimens, and a vast array of artifacts and artwork from across Arnhem Land. Collecting Cultures explores the complex and, at times, contentious legacy of this ethnographic fieldwork and artifact collection, revealing how the crosscultural encounters transformed and continue to transform our understanding of people and places. Sally K. May is lecturer at the Australian National University.
