a trade show all day with a headache while popping breath mints? There’s an old saying, “Nothing good happens after…” You can fill in your own time. You may be having fun at the hotel bar, but the longer you stay up and out, the more tired you will be in the morning.
Take a look, too, at the exhibitors, and make a list of must-see booths.
Size Up Your Competition
Know Your Mission
Most of the time, trade shows take place in beautiful, interesting cities with many attractions and distractions for visitors. Unfortunately, when you attend a trade show, you are not a tourist. I remember one new, young coworker who showed up at the company booth after a nice morning run and a leisurely breakfast, talking about the sightseeing he was going to do later that day. Companies have different policies about whether you’re allowed any free time during a show, but it’s safe to say that your presence is typically required during the hours the show floor is open. If you are assigned booth duty, get there on time and work the booth with enthusiasm. Interacting with potential customers rather than standing there staring into space will make the time go by faster. For some companies, evenings are your own. For others, you will be expected to tour the hospitality suites or take part in a group dinner. Make sure you understand what your schedule is, and respect it.
A trade show is the best time to learn first-hand about your competition. Be assured your company is being checked out by them. Be a straight shooter about this, however. Don’t remove your nametag and think you’re going incognito or surreptitiously try to photograph their booth from a distance. Go right up to their booth, introduce yourself and ask for a demo. If you do this, though, there’s one caveat. Customers come first at a show booth. Don’t interrupt when a company
representative is involved with a visitor at a booth. They might be on the brink of making a sale or concluding a deal. Don’t even interrupt to say a quick hello.
Don’t Skimp With the Business Cards
Bring them, and bring a lot of them. Bring more than you think you could ever use. That’s why you’re at the show – to network and make new contacts for you and your company. You can always bring the excess home. Every show, people run out of busiContinued on following page
Map A Route, Make A Schedule
A trade show is more than just the exhibit hall. There are speakers, seminars, training sessions and social events. Long before you arrive at the show, you should check out the schedule on the show’s website. Make sure nothing of interest to you is missed.
