360° LIFESTYLE
Lifestyle's not a catchall term. Sure, hotel brands
and independents need their taglines and swim
lanes. But, let's face it. Nobody just lives and
breathes one thing. No matter how you much
you love your work, you still play. You work out,
go to concerts or films, dress up for a date night
and dress down for a play date. You binge watch
the series du jour, then do giveback in your
community. Multi-hyphenate is just the modern
minimum daily requirement
This issue takes a look at how we really live is
influencing design. Since your vision board probably has a lot more than hotels on it (at least we
hope it does!), we went out to find fresh inspiration from the superstar creatives who are influencing culture, entertainment and even what we
think of as a "hotel."
So, for starters, we reached out to David
Korins, the multidisciplinary design and
branding wiz behind the set designs of Broadway
blockbusters such "Hamilton: An American
Musical" and "Beetlejuice" and Kris Moran, Wes
Anderson's frequent collaborator on the interiors of his films and also the visionary behind a
range of design work that will include a growing
number independent-spirited hotels and restaurant across the US. In "Drama School," page 30,
they share their trade secrets for lighting, value
engineering and creating immersive environments that become viral on Instagram.
We also asked hotel clients what they're
seeing on their lifestyle radars (Lifestyle Levels
Up, page 18). MGallery's Yohan Amiot gave us
the big-platform view for this collection of independents, which now includes 21c Museum
Hotels. What he's seeing: women have lifestyle
demands all their own and hotels need to understand that in big and small razors (like having
makeup remover available at the front desk, not
just razors). Wellness is an obvious lifestyle piece
that's changing design-not just in the workout

spaces and restaurants, but in terms of carving
out mindful places where guests and/locals can
power down. Domio's Olivia Hnatyshin shares
design lessons learned from this company which
recently crossed over from its home-sharing
model into branded hotel operations. Takeaways
included the need to think about how people
use these spaces-resulting in decisions such as
double-wide mirrors so that several people can
check out their look at the same time or a sofa
bed custom-designed for bed-like comfort and a
style that suits the overall concept.
Even luxury isn't a one-size-fits-all lifestyle.
We're seeing a real return to elegance with a
modern twist, and few projects embody that
past-meets-present vibe better than the renovated Raffles Singapore, page 12. Champalimaud Design stripped away all the design jargon
that left this gem pretty dull and made it shine.
Who wouldn't want to be in character to enjoy
a signature Singapore Sling at the hotel's storied
Long Bar or just relish in the grown-up poshness
of the clean-lined grandeur of the lobby?
So, what happens when you want to kick
back? Younost in St. Petersburg, Russia (page
26). Located on top of a mall, this eatery works
for couples, kids and groups by focusing everything around a muted palette rather playing up
Instagram moments. Beaded curtains are a fun
way to provide privacy and still drive design.
Nothing here dictates how to experience this-a
lifestyle mantra for sure.
