This is a special event that is a bit more challenging and several obstacles longer than a typical Standard run. An NAC course has an extra contact performance and may include an additional set of ﬁve to six weaves for both levels. In addition, the course may include multiple side changes and extra discriminations. Currently, at a regular weekend event, you can qualify in the NAC class with 12 faults or less and no off-courses. There is a Specialist level (typically 21 to 23 obstacles) and an Intern level (typically 19 to 21 obstacles). Beginners enter at the Intern level. Competitors will have until September 3, 2007 to qualify to enter the championships. Information on how to qualify and location of qualifying events is available online at www. docna.com as is the schedule of events for each day of the championships. It is our goal to recognize and support all mixed and rare breed canine sports as a rewarding part of responsible dog ownership NADAC exhibitors from the U.S., Canada, Hawaii, and Australia are clearly enjoying agility. With up to 10 trials on offer each weekend there is no shortage of opportunities to get out and play with your dogs. And the way we play has just gotten better. NADAC exhibitors now have an opportunity to participate in the new and exciting class called Hoopers. This class is similar in course design as a Jumpers class but consists solely of what are called “ground-speed obstacles.” The obstacles are a series of hoops (think hula hoops) set on the ground and the dog is required to run through them. The exciting thing about this class is the fact that it requires the same handling skills as Jumpers, but the dog is not jumping so there is no “air time” to slow the dog down. It will undoubtedly test the handler in regard to timely cues. At the present time Hoopers may be offered by clubs as an add-on class if time permits at a given trial or on a Friday before the trial. Hoopers is an ofﬁcial NADAC class and qualifying points in this class will earn a Hoopers title. Speciﬁcations for the ground speed obstacle can be found in the ﬁles section of the NADACAgility@yahoogroups.com list. I am sure this class will make a lot of people and dogs smile and will deﬁnitely be one to showcase teamwork and handling skills. NADAC is currently examining safety issues in relation to the teeter obstacle. Recent data collected by the NADAC ofﬁce has shown results, based on the current speciﬁcations, that are a cause for concern. The primary issues are the great diversity in drop speeds and the variance in the point at which the board begins to drop (that is, where the dog is on the board when it begins to pivot) with the resulting impact that is transferred from the board to our dogs when the board hits the ground. So far the collected data has shown that the earlier the dog has control of the board past the pivot point, the smaller the resulting impact when the board contacts the ground. Conversely the later the dog has control of the board, with more “air time” the dog has before the board contacts the ground, the greater the resulting impact. At the moment data is still being collected by the NADAC ofﬁce. NADAC believes the safety and well-being of dogs participating in NADAC trials to be of paramount importance. For that reason, the teeter is temporarily being withdrawn from use in courses until such time as the correct safety speciﬁcations can be determined. Clubs and exhibitors will be kept up to date on the progress of this situation via the respective email lists. A request from all agility organizations: When you move, please don’t forget to update your dogs’ records with every organization with which your dog is registered. This ensures that title certiﬁcates and other correspondence get to you in a timely manner.
