How's this for a high-stakes gamble? Sbe entertainment's
Sam Nazarian is betting $415 million that converting the
Sahara Hotel to the SLS Las Vegas is "a major milestone,
not only for the expansion of the SLS Hotels brand, but for
the future of Las Vegas." The design for the recently opened
complex was a collaboration involving Gensler, designer
Philippe Starck and Nazarian.
The project's participants are spreading their bets, by
creating a trio of distinct accommodation styles in three
separate towers, each designed to appeal to a different
clientele. Specifically, the property's 1,613 guest rooms and
suites are divided thus:
* The all-suite LUX Tower (above) has been designed to
appeal to the leisure and gaming traveler who's looking
for a more lifestyle-driven room experience. The suite's
classic French influence is matched by oversized sofas,
Starck-designed chandeliers and sconces, a custom closet
armoire and a peek-a-boo shower window with a view into
the bedroom.

* The World Tower rooms target business and convention
guests, where luxury is realized through a commitment
to functionality. State-of-the-art in-room technologies
are paired with such elements as a monochromatic color
palette with pink accents, full-length LED lit mirrors
flanking the bed and custom tapestries and furniture.
* The Story Tower caters to Las Vegas' younger, entertainment and nightlife-seeking crowd via such features as a
multi-functional bed that serves as each room's centerpiece.
Further enhancing the space's social appeal is the electric
yellow vanity that doubles as a bar, the backlit ceiling mirror
and the polished chrome swivel minibar cabinet.
Beth Campbell, a Gensler principal and managing
director, said the SLS property may well precipitate a
seismic shift in Vegas. "The Strip continues to grow and
redefine itself, all while Downtown Las Vegas is experiencing a rebirth. SLS Las Vegas' position along the north
edge of the Strip will actually be a key intersection between
the Strip and Downtown developments."
