internationally, demand
for A/E/C services is growing. In response, many
U.S.-based firms are finding new opportunities to
take their skills overseas,
expanding their practices while sharing proven
solutions. Healthcare Design reached out to
its Editorial Advisory Board to find out what's
driving new business and where firms are seeing the most activity. Many reported an uptick
in projects, with one firm reporting that its
work outside the U.S. has more than quadrupled since 2012.
Among the hot spots where U.S. firms are seeing demand for services increase are China,
Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Egypt, and
Australia. Board members noted that some of
the drivers behind these new projects are similar to those in the U.S., including population
growth, demand for more ambulatory facilities, and aging building stock. For example, as
China begins to phase out its one-child policy,
birth rates are expected to rise in the country,
driving the need for women's and infants' hospitals, while providing care to a senior population that will reach more than 350 million by
2035 is also a priority. In Australia, a growing
trend in public-private partnerships is resulting in new projects, such as Sunshine Coast
University Hospital, which opened this spring
in Brisbane. One firm noted that it's doing work
and answering numerous requests for proposals across Canada due to growing investments
being made in healthcare infrastructure there.
There's also growing activity in academic
and research-driven healthcare facilities,
such as India's 150-acre All India Institute
of Medical Sciences campus, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, which will be an integrated
healthcare campus with a 960-bed hospital, educational and research facilities, and residential buildings, when it opens in 2020. In Egypt,
Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 is expanding its campus to include a 30,000-squarefoot Academic Building with simulation lab
technology.

EGYPT

Cairo, in association with Egypt Cancer
Network, is doubling its bed capacity to
550 inpatient beds and adding outpatient
and academics to become one of the most
comprehensive pediatric cancer treatment
centers and teaching hospitals in the
world. CallisonRTKL (Washington, D.C.)
partnered with Egypt-based Shaker Consultancy Group on the three-phase project,
with the first phase expected to be completed in July 2019.

THE ALL INDIA INSTITUTE
OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
INDIA

campus under construction in Nagpur,
Maharashtra, India, will feature a fully
integrated and walkable healthcare
campus that's supported by educational
and research facilities, residential buildings, gardens, and parklands. The 150-acre
project, led by the consortium of Perkins Eastman (global locations) and India-based
firm Edifice Consultants Private Ltd., is expected to open in 2020.

A I R E D A L E H O S P I T A L , in West Yorkshire, England, broke ground on a new
15,000-square-foot acute assessment unit with 48 beds and an ambulatory lounge
for patients who need urgent assessment and treatment but don't need to be admitted
to the hospital. The unit, designed by Integrated Health Projects (Watford, England),
is scheduled to open in spring 2018.

nutrition, and wellness. Diamond Schmitt Architects
(Toronto) designed the facility in collaboration with
CallisonRTKL (Toronto).

MIDDLE EAST

signed an agreement with Sharjah Healthcare City (SHCC) to open a new 100-bed
general hospital as part of a tax-free development in Sharjah, U.A.E., operated
under the Sharjah Health Authority. SHCC is planned to be one of the largest
healthcare centers in the Middle East, covering an area of 26 million square feet.

SUNSHINE COAST
U N I V E R S I T Y H O S P I TA L ,

AUSTRALIA

located in Brisbane, Australia, opened
its doors in April, representing the first
new, non-replacement tertiary teaching
hospital in Australia in 20 years. It's
also Queensland's first public hospital
public-private partnership, developed by
Exemplar Health. The team included Rice
Daubney and Architectus (architects),
Aurecon (engineer), Lendlease (builder), and Place Design Group (landscape architect).

C A L D E R O N G U A R D I A H O S P I T A L in San Jose, Costa Rica,

is expanding its services with a new 226,042-square-foot patient tower.
Construction on the $83 million project began this past spring and includes
209 beds, 35 incubators, radiology, medical imaging, surgery services, and
an isolation unit.
