Similar wing light boards are described in Tessin's diary.12 Other Lighting Several scenic units have provision for built-in lighting. A unique item is a free-standing flat painted as a fruit tree. Each fruit is painted on transparent fabric and lit from behind. Several ground rows have lamp holders attached to their backs to allow the use of light fixtures. The theatre at Cˇ esk y´ Krumlov is not only a museum of Baroque stagecraft, it is an experimental laboratory for exploring the techniques used to create the spectacle and performance on the Baroque stage. The Baroque Theatre Foundation of the Castle at Cˇ esk y´ Krumlov has been hosting an annual international conference, "The World of Baroque Theatre" in early summer for the past five years. As a part of the conference, "experimental" productions of Baroque opera using the theatre's scenery, machinery and lighting have been produced. These productions have been a highpoint of the conferences and have given the conference participants the experience of attending a court production in the eighteenth century. The continuing research and productions at Cˇ esk y´ Krumlov will undoubtedly add more to our knowledge of Baroque theatre techniques. ❖ Frank Mohler is Professor Emeritus at Appalacian State University.
