Wood at the original Mast General
Store, located at the village of Valle
Crucis, North Carolina. Wood serves
as the general manager of this iconic
structure, which has operated almost
continuously since opening in 1883.
Where do you like to go? Mast
General Store, Valle Crucis. "The
original store really does still serve
as a community general store for
the locals ... We have the Valle Crucis post office in the front room of
the original store. So the community comes together there real early to
pick up their mail or drop off their
mail. And we've got a pot-bellied
stove. And the locals still come and
trade stories."

Susan Jackson Mills. Susan
Mills lives in Salem, Virginia, and
serves as the enthusiastic executive
director of the Friends of the Blue
Ridge Parkway.
Where do you like to go?
Peaks of Otter, Virginia, just off
the Blue Ridge Parkway. "You
have the Johnson Farm, which is
a historical farm. You can experience it, and you can also hike
to Sharp Top. There is so much
there, so keep an eye on history
but also beauty at the Peaks of
Otter. I think it's one of the one
places, besides Mabry Mill, where
you can actually be infused
with really what the parkway is
about."
