However, it's a different story with specialty OEs.
Specialty OEs develop off-highway vehicles for very
specific tasks or conditions, and there are hundreds of

them across the United States and Canada. Specialty OEs
prefer A/C units and components that are readily available in the heavy-duty aftermarket because they're easier
to install and more feasible for limited production runs.

Corp., Jim Darmiento has spent most of his
career designing climate control systems for
dozers, graders, tractors - the kind of heavy
machinery commonly found toiling away at
construction, agriculture, forestry, mining,
and other types of off-highway job sites.
In most cases, factory-installed HVAC systems evolve
from a clean sheet of paper and are tightly integrated with
the overall design of the cab.
"By the time we put the finishing touches on an OEM
system, we've accumulated a lot of knowledge about the
vehicle, its operator, and the heat loads we're trying to
manage," Darmiento says. "We bring a completed cab and
vehicle to our test lab in Seattle and fine-tune the system's performance across a wide range of under-hood and
in-cab conditions. We play an active role in sizing components and routing refrigerant lines and ductwork. It's
a very collaborative relationship with the OEM to make
sure everything functions exactly as it should when each
model comes off the line."
