Childs, this 16-mile frothy adventure rewards rafters with several class II and III rapids, including “Off the Wall,” which Williams describes as “a fast sluice against ledges with some powerful reactionary waves.” “Verde Falls”—a “big juicy flush” at high water, according to Williams—quickly follows. Another bevy of rapids can be found on a stretch of Oak Creek near Sedona known by local paddlers as the Indian Gardens run. During one of a handful of days during the year when the creek transforms into a river rushing at 400 to 600 cubic feet per second, it can delight thrill-seekers with class IV full-on adventure.

If you don’t want to wait for the chance to take a raucous rafting ride down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, Tyler Williams, author of Paddling Arizona: A Guide to Lakes, Rivers, and Creeks, offers another option: a stretch of the Verde River south of Camp Verde in North Central Arizona. For high-speed excitement, head to Arizona’s West Coast: the hundreds of miles of sparkling blue-green Colorado River that carve the boundary between the state and its California and Nevada neighbors. Lake Mead, the largest manmade reservoir in the country that straddles Arizona’s border with Nevada north of Kingman, is a favorite among boaters and water-sport enthusiasts who rent or bring their own pontoon boats, personal watercraft or power boats for waterskiing, kneeboarding or wakeboarding. Other high-speed water-sport enthusiasts opt for a 16-mile section of scenic waterway affectionately called the “Parker Strip,” located between the town of Parker and the Parker Dam. Another option is Lake Havasu, known as the “Personal Watercraft Capital of the World.” The 45-mile-long lake formed by the Parker Dam is flanked by Lake Havasu State Park and framed by rugged cliffs, sparkling blue-green water and azure skies. The lake and the nearby Colorado River serve up wet and wild adventures such as jetskiing and waterskiing. You can bring your own watercraft toys or rent them lakeside in this town known for its most famous landmark, the London Bridge.
