Spring Ahead
EoA's beachy makeover in Florida

Malcolm Berg likes a good story. The founder, president, and
design director of Miami-based EoA, says he starts all of his
projects with a strong narrative. For Maia at the JW Marriott in
Marco Island, Florida, the owners wanted something light and
fresh, particularly as the previous three-meal dining space felt
dark and dingy.
"The original architect of the property had traveled
extensively through Bali and had called the resort an island
within an island," says Berg. "We used that as a starting
point" and weaved a narrative about waking up in a seaside
cottage in Bali, he adds.
"You open the double doors, the wind gently tugs at the
linen as the sheers flow past you. The sun's warmth and the
ocean's energizing breath permeate. At your feet, on the
eroded wood deck, lies a bowl of artisanal breads and fresh
fruits-you are always welcome."
Reimagined as a breakfast restaurant, the idea of waking
up and throwing the shutters open to breathe the fresh

ocean air was kept at the center of every design detail.
A light and monochromatic palette prevails: banquettes,
communal tables, and synthetic wicker chairs are durable
but still have the right beachy look. Mirrors were used
strategically to help reflect the light along the plaster walls
behind banquettes and cleverly inside the fishing basketinspired lighting fixtures. A barn door slider with a door
handle wrapped in rope allows the right-hand private dining
room extension to be opened or closed.
Berg brought the narrative through the branding as
well: emphasizing farm-to-table freshness at the buffet in
everything from the chalkboard signage to the muffin display
(wrapped in tissue, still warm in the tin). Even the name Maia is
a nod to the Roman goddess of spring and growth.
"We wanted it to feel very human, very approachable," says
Berg. And it does: "When guests arrive here they all have smiles
on their faces. It makes you feel as if you've just woken up."
