The training agencies also have to meet certain requirements. Each must be nonprofit and a member of Assistance Dogs International. Deb Cunningham of Eyes Ears Nose & Paws, a servicedog organization based in North Carolina, talks with the employees about proper care for dogs. She teaches them how to walk the dogs (with a loose leash), what signs and body language to watch for (tucked tail means high stress level), and basic, short commands to use. “The most important command you can remember,” she says, “is ‘good puppy!’ ” The volunteers then get to try working with a puppy and a few assistance dogs in the training center’s mock cabins. The employees practice getting dogs to sit under a cabin seat. They carry a puppy around to see just how heavy a 15-pound cutie can feel after a few minutes. They also learn how to clean up any doggie accidents and how to go through airport security with the dogs. At the end of training, employees have the
