But right about now, with simmer in the city in full swing and the urge to get away — if only for the day — at its peak, it seems appropriate to mention that a serious debt of gratitude is owed to politicians for the existence of a favorite regional escape: Virginia’s Skyline Drive. After all, it was a federally appointed body — the Interior Department’s Southern Appalachian National Park Committee — that spurred the creation of the scenic byway. Construction began in 1931 during Herbert Hoover’s administration and was completed eight years later under Franklin Roosevelt. As Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd, an early supporter of the project, noted, “It is a wonder way over which the tourist will ride comfortably in his car while he is stirred by a view as exhilarating as the aviator may see from the plane.” And exhilarating it is.
