son remain fairly consistent over time, they tend to vary by Wildlife Management Units. Research deer from WMUs 2D, 4B and 4D indicate similar harvest rates, while WMU 2G typically has much lower harvest rates. This is thought to be primarily driven by lower hunting pressure. Rugged terrain and limited road access can provide safe havens for the deer, further decreasing harvest rates. Nowhere is the influence of hunting pressure more evident than in the mature buck population. While older bucks seem to be elusive and wary, hunters still harvest up to two-thirds of the mature buck population in WMUs with relatively high hunting pressure. Alternatively, in WMUs with lower pressure, less than 40 percent of the mature bucks are killed. Yearling buck harvest rates vary similarly, but at much lower rates, due to antler restrictions protecting about half the yearling male population. Even in areas of high hunting pressure, only 40 percent of the yearlings are harvested, this rate drops to 25 per26
cent in areas with lower pressure. In stark contrast to the relatively high mature buck harvest rates, less than 5 percent of fawns are harvested, while older does are harvested at rates between 15 and 20 percent. These lower harvest rates are evident when PGC deer aging teams collect data from butcher shops across the state. It is not uncommon to find adult does older than 5 years of age in the harvest, proving the presence of the age group in the remaining population. Interestingly, in Pennsylvania, yearling does appear more vulnerable to harvest than older, more mature does. Hunter selection towards the biggest doe in a group has typically been thought to increase mature doe harvest. However, our data suggest yearling does have a higher harvest rate, potentially due to their lack of experience. As the Game Commission and Penn State University continue to study whitetailed deer, we improve our understanding of the behavior and ecology of these highly sought after animals. Most importantly, we know that many deer survive through the hunting season each year. This is especially true with regards to antlerless deer.
