Class Notes are published twice a year in Horace Mann Magazine, and are archived online. a Class Notes class notes 1935 1937 John McCormack, who lives in Dallas, TX, is still playing tournament Bridge. He wrote that it’s a wonderful way to kill time. 1940 1942  The Class of 1940 will celebrate its 70th reunion during Homecoming weekend October 2, 2010. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) honored George Avakian in a celebration at Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on Jan. 12, 2010. On a night that recognized the lifetime achievements of seven jazz musicians as “Jazz Masters” Avakian was given a special A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy, honoring his support of jazz and its musicians. The gala concert and awards ceremony was broadcast live on National Public Radio. Jerome Hyman, now 89, and living in Memphis, TN, says he has never forgotten his days at Horace Mann School. Bob Zucker still lives in Roslyn, NY. He has lived there since he left the Navy in 1946. Each year he takes his family on a winter vacation. This year all 26 of them went to Club Med in Cancun, Mexico. James Ludwig had a wonderful trip to Istanbul, the Greek Isles and Athens with his wife Patsy. He still plays tennis every weekend and takes a lesson every Wednesday. 1944 want to get together from time to time for dinner and not wait five years for another reunion. All in all, it was a wonderful evening.” Fred Berman also tells us he is still serving as a judge three days a week. He was recently written up in the Wall Street Journal as a member of the Wednesday 10, a networking group formed 55 years ago by the late journalist, William Safire. Shirley Gabriel Mathews sent the following lovely note to the Alumni Office: “Just a note to say I’m grateful for the years spent at Horace Mann from first grade to my senior year and graduation. Those 12 wonderful years have been the foundation of my life. I’m 83 and still have many pleasant memories of the old Horace Mann building at 120th St. Each class singing carols around the Christmas tree, the spring music and flower festival each year and the wonderful teachers. I hope the young people today are gaining from Horace Mann as much as I did.” 1945 1947  The Class of 1945 will celebrate its 65th reunion during Homecoming weekend October 2, 2010. (Not pictured): Bill Bangser Lawrence Parish reports that he is enjoying life as a “Dutchess County Squire” with his wife, June and their poodle, Charlie. Says Lawrence, “Fortunately or unfortunately, uneventful.” 1948 Bob Zucker ’37 with his ten great-grandchildren Fred Berman writes: “Our 65 reunion was held in Cafe Centro located in the Met Life Building outside of Grand Central Terminal on 10/24/09. Most who came attended with their spouses or significant others. The food was outstanding; the companionship very special as each attendee got up and spoke briefly about what life is like now. Some are still working. Others are retired. One of the highlights of the evening was the visit during the cocktail hour from Dr. Thomas Kelly, the Head of School which includes all branches starting with the Nursery School on the Upper East Side and continuing through High School up in Riverdale. We all agreed that we th Bob Sandler reflected on his Class’ 60th reunion in fall 2008, noting that he’d like his notes added to the “Better Late Than Never” category. Wrote Sandler: “The Class of 1948 held its 60th reunion in the fall at Horace Mann. We gathered for cocktails and dinner at the beautiful Rose Atrium on campus. Seventeen classmates attended the affair including Chester Babbin, Hank Bangser, Charlie Jacobs, Sherman Schaefer, Jay Miller, Lowell Beveridge, Saran Jonas, Roger Rose, Wally Toscanini, Howard Blank, Byron (Bill) Greenfield, Arthur Schleifer, John Small (Jr.), Paul Leeman, Frank Gilbert, Bennet Harper, and Bob Sandler.
