 FRENCH CONNECTION 2003 Clos de Papes, Chateuneuf du Pape, France The 2003
Clos de Papes is a red blend of 65 percent Grenache, 20 percent Mourvedre,
10 percent Syrah, and two other Rhone varietals, Counoise and Muscardin.
The wine is produced by the talented French winemaker Vincent Avril, who,
during the last five years, has consistently produced some of the finest
wines in France. This wine offers a great rich garnet color with a lot of
bright berry flavors on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is stunning, with
a sweet glycerin approach followed by nice viscosity and a magnificent long
finish that offers great depth and unusual complexity of fruit and
freshness. In 2005, the wine was rated the number two “Wine of the
Year” by Wine Spectator. Each bottle should be decanted before service
and paired with a meat dish, like a Kobe beef brisket, hanger steak with
California goat cheese potato gratin or a hard French goat cheese such as
