RIDING THE BULL . . . . .LAMBORGHINI MURCIELAGO LP640 Carrying on the
Lamborghini’s legacy o f sexy, sleek, edgy and sinfully s p e e d y
vehicles, the Murcielago LP640 is the latest model to tear up the road.
The LP moniker has been with Lambo cars since the 1974 introduction of the
Countach LP400, indicating longitudinale posteriore, or an engine
positioned longitudinally. This was a big deal to Lamborghini; the
Countach’s predecessor, the Miura, featured an interesting-to-handle
rear-engine, transverse layout. It was also important for the
world-renowned name to demonstrate that they had corrected what many had
seen as a problem. I n t ro d u c e d in 2001, to the awe of everyone who
saw it, the Murcielago was a breath of fresh air. The Diablo, which it
replaced, was a solid model, but too subtle to carry the Lamborghini name.
With the Murci, the brand returned to the realm of extremities. On top of
the amazing styling, the new car was extremely quick, once again
establishing Lamborghini as the epitome of grand touring sports cars.
During the Murcielago’s life, however, the competition started to catch
up, and the Lamborghini began to get lost in a crowd of super fast cars.
Something needed to be done, and the LP640 is just the shot in the arm the
company required. The LP640, to date, is the fastest, quickest, most
scandalously wonderful car to emerge from Lambo’s digs in Sant’Agata
Bolognese, Italy. And that is saying a lot. Capable of screaming to 60
miles per hour in little more than three seconds, the car can hit 100 in
eight seconds and has a top speed of over 200 mph. This is exactly the
kind of fury Lamborghini is known for. All this rage comes courtesy of a
6.5liter V12 producing 631 horsepower, up March/April 2007 Sierrastyle's
