what it is today. “Lino is one of the most highly copied glass artists
in the world, but there is no one who can match him,” Rigby says.
“He’s that good.” Just be advised; the collector looking to fill
their shelves with works by these artists won’t get off cheap. A piece
by Tagliapietra, for example, typically starts in the $40,000 range. That
also brings a warning: unethical art dealers can quickly scam the novice
collector. It’s important to work with someone who has a solid
reputation in the industry. Most glass artists sign their work, so check
for signatures and even inventory numbers before buying. Look for a
statement of authenticity or a provenance history of how the art has
changed hands since it was created as well. Of course, becoming a
collector doesn’t necessitate looking only for the highestpriced pieces.
Beauty, as is often said, is in the eye of the beholder. Local glass

, are creating very beautiful and highly coveted pieces. Local art
galleries, art tours and other community art events can be the only
sources some glass art collectors ever need. That gets to the critical
aspect of collecting – being moved by a piece of art for what it is, not
just what it’s worth or what others say about it or because it matches
the couch. Art glass bears the distinction of being the most portable art
on the market. It can go in the living room by the window one day and be
lit up by the sunlight streaming in. The next day it can be in the kitchen
casting colored shadows across the counter. Wherever it goes, as long as
there’s light, it will show off its beauty in new and wonderful ways.
“Make your art part of your every day life,” Freitas says. “Make it
something you can experience and appreciate and enjoy every day.” I’m
happy to take that advice. Thirty years later, the glass paperweight I
rescued from the gutter still occupies a place on my desk, more decoration
than tool. It may not be worthy of a place in the Corning Museum of
Glass’ Worlds Within paperweight exhibit or, then again, maybe it is…
but every day it reminds me of a simpler time and reassures me that beauty
