It took AirCorps Aviation nearly five years
to restore this Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.
Because the World War II aircraft was
little more than a shell, technicians had to
manufacture more than 90% of its parts.

surprise that some of the data is incomplete or unfinished
because of the busy war effort. "
Abandoned at the U.S. Army Air Forces Dobodura
Airfield in Papua New Guinea on Sept. 18,1944, the
Republic P-47 was little more than a shell when AirCorps
Aviation acquired it. To help fill in the missing pieces,
technicians laser scanned a wing and the fuselage of
another P-47 on display in the Yanks Air Museum
in Chino, California. With the data, the team reverse
engineered the parts they needed.
" We probably manufactured more than 90% of the P-47
from scratch, " said Hokuf of the nearly five-year restoration
project. " We had a lot of unique challenges with it in terms
of fabrication and manufacturing. First, it's a complex and
massive aircraft. It's so big you can fit a P-51 Mustang
inside it. But there are not nearly as many of them flying as
the P-51, so it's a lot harder to find original parts. "
Crafting solutions for
business jets, airliners
After fine-tuning its capabilities for World War II
aircraft, AirCorps Aviation has translated the team's skill
and knowledge into modern aircraft. They found that
operators of commercial airliners and business jets also
need reverse engineering and precision metal fabrication
capabilities.
The rise of in-flight connectivity and entertainment
systems means cabins and cockpits need to be adapted
to carry the new avionics and electronics. Those
modifications require metal brackets, shelving and
housings, all of which AirCorps Aviation fabricates.
" Restoring aircraft was a natural springboard for
us into other segments of aviation, " Hokuf said. " The
process to make parts for legacy aircraft is the same as
it is for a commercial airliner or business jet. We use
