show off the Cessna 180 that technicians restored
from nose to tail. The panel features a suite of
Garmin avionics, including a G3X Touch primary
flight display and GTN 750 Xi GPS/Nav/Comm/MFD.
Dividing time between
restorations and maintenance
For its restorations, Arcus Aero focuses mainly on
backcountry aircraft such as the Cessna Skywagon and de
Havilland Beaver.
" Everybody thinks putting them back together takes
forever, " Aciego said. " Actually, it's taking them apart that's
so time-consuming. It's like baking a cake; most of the work
is upfront. The Cessna 180 and one of the 185s are now fully
restored. They're gorgeous. We'll be exhibiting at Oshkosh and
entering them in the Lindy Awards. "
About 60% of the team's time is dedicated to restorations
with 40% spent on other maintenance, avionics and pre-buy
inspections. In the hangar, in between the single-engine pistons
and light twins, you'll find an occasional vintage aircraft - a
1937 Piper J-4 Cub and Stearman biplane. A North American
T-28 Trojan is scheduled for avionics upgrades in August.
" For our pitot-static and transponder testing, we chose the
T-RX test set from CCX Technologies, which is comparable
to the IFR6000, " Aciego said. " In 2021, I attended the AEA
Convention in Dallas. For two days, I met with vendors
and compared specs and prices. I liked the T-RX. It's really
light and useful, and has all the capabilities, plus GPS. Since
they're a newer company and not well known within the
FAA, our FSDO inspector had to write a letter to ride along
with our OpSpecs saying that the equipment meets all of the
FAA's specifications. We've been really impressed with the
equipment. It's been great, very user-friendly. "
In addition to the AEA International Convention &
Trade Show, Aciego values the association's training at its
headquarters in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
" We've taken a number of classes, including a Garmin
installation course as well as a pitot-static transponder class so
we could get certified, " Aciego said. " We have an A&P and an
apprentice scheduled to attend an avionics installation class in
a couple of months. "
