HISTORY ON DISPLAY Photography by: Dero Sanford Six artistic sculptures that once adorned a local hospital have found a new home in the Murphy Arts District. Originally commissioned by Dr. Paul Henley in the mid70s and supported by Russel Marks and Lyda Merkle, this community project was a gift to the city. Sculptors Richard H. Ellis and Tony Sheets created works of art that tell the story of Arkansas' history. Standing nine feet tall with a combined weight of nearly 20 tons, the concrete works draw attention to the early inhabitants, such as the Caddo and Quapaw Indians; locations along the rivers like the Arkansas Post, Camden, and El Dorado; and early explorers La Salle, de Tonti, de Soto, and Cavelier. The seventh piece of the historic collection is exhibited on the grounds of the South Arkansas Historical Preservation Society. www.GoElDorado.com 99
