Similarly, a photograph can be much more effective with the use
of a tape measure in the photograph.
Example 4. Photo with improper lighting, angle and depth of field.
DISTANCE AND SIZE PERSPECTIVES
In order to clearly demonstrate size, items should be photographed
with an object for scale reference. Photographs should be taken
from straight overhead or at right angles to correctly capture
distance between objects. Officer Campbell also recommends
taking a photo with and without the scale to prevent allegations
that the scale itself is hiding or distorting damage. Similarly,
photographing without the scale shows the relationship of the
detail to the overall scene.
Example 7. Tape measures displaying size of dent.
In Examples 5 and 6, a quarter was used to show size of the hail
damage and the investigator moved around the vehicle in order
to obtain a shot with shadowing that allowed for the damage to
be visible. In this case, a tree acted as a shade. A light shade (file
folder, notebook, etc.) such as the one used in Example 1 may also
be helpful for this situation.
Example 8. Without tape measure.
Perspective can be skewed by the position from which the
photograph is taken. Example 9 would better demonstrate the
area of interest if the investigator got out of the car to take the
photos (assuming it was safe to do so).
Example 5. Size and perspective of hail damage.
Example 9. Photo taken from the front passenger side with too much of
vehicle and glare.
Example 6. A shade would have been a greater improvement.
The use of a tripod, monopod, selfie stick, timer or remote
control also could have allowed for a better perspective of
the area even without physically getting out of the car. The
same could have been employed in order to obtain the proper
angle for the VIN and hail damage photos. There are several
