Springer is also appreciative of the technology that drives the research process, adding, "Online search, retrieval, and linking tools - supplemented by rich metadata - have enhanced serendipitous discovery." Digital technology has even bolstered the peer review that is a standard for association and academic journals. "This process has strengthened in rigor, as a number of electronic peer-review tools - including CrossCheck to detect plagiarism - have been incorporated," says Springer, referring to his organization's Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). Association journals have embraced the preservation and repository role of such services. For example, Teresa Brinati, director of publishing at the Society of American Archivists, says the entire run of the American Archivist is archived in the SAA Archives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which has two print copies of every issue published. JSTOR's digital library of more than 2,000 academic journals, which it makes available to 9,200 institutions worldwide, is indexed in Google. While much of the content in JSTOR is free of charge, some is available for sale. Nearly 850 journals are part of this program. Typically, associations that publish scholarly journals monetize access to the most recent issues. At SAA, Brinati explains, the six most recent issues of American Archivist (three years' worth) are behind a "moving wall" reserved for SAA members and subscribers to American Archivist. Articles from the six most recent issues can be purchased by the public for $18 per article. The rest of the content - the entire backlist, which consists of 36 MAY/JUNE 15 signature nearly 270 issues - is open access. But even the issues that are embargoed have open-access elements. For example, the table of contents, From the Editor, book reviews, and article abstracts are available to the public. Similarly, a number of JADA's sections - Patient Page, Ethical Moments, and others - are available to all readers without having to pay. American Archivists has an institutional subscription rate and an individual subscription rate, says Brinati, who clarifies that within each category, the rate for either a print or online subscription is the same price. Those who wish to receive both the print and online version pay a premium rate. Randolph (Randy) A. Nana, publisher at the American Institute of Physics, which publishes the journal Physics Today, sees the greatest challenge in the next wave of digital journal publishing as "the ability to scale revenue" and offer access to content on a variety of platforms. "Associations have to be sure their readers can access from a variety of media devices," he says. "They also have to make sure they don't leave their members behind by going in directions their readers are unable or unwilling to go."
