PROTECTING A CANNABIS BUSINESS
FROM CYBER THREATS
Cannabis companies are considered ripe
targets for cyberattacks.
Like any other business that operates with
IT platforms containing sensitive company
and customer data, cannabis operations
should consider digital asset protection a
top security need.
" There largely still seems to be a lack
of understanding of cyber threats and
vulnerability in the cannabis industry, " says
Andy Fleet, director of cannabis business
development for ADT Commercial. " Almost all
cannabis organizations are using POS (pointof-sale)
systems or some type of IT platform
to engage with their customers, which they
may not fully realize opens them up to an
elevated risk of cyber theft and fraud. "
Thankfully, as the industry matures, business
leaders are gaining a better understanding
of how to protect themselves from serious
threats to IT infrastructure.
" There's an increased interest in leveraging
more cloud-based solutions for all things
security and data, " adds Fleet.
PRIMARY IT THREATS
Eric Schlissel, CEO and chief technology
officer at Cure8 Tech, says cannabis
companies are vulnerable to malware and
ransomware, particularly through phishing or
attacks within the supply chain via wholesale
suppliers or buyers.
" These are hacks of your vendors and partners that have access to your networks and data, " Eric
explains. " It shows the importance of choosing your vendors and partners carefully and making
sure they take cyber security as seriously as you do. "

" Once hackers have access to your systems they can do a lot of things, including using their access
to your surveillance system to plan a robbery. "
Schlissel advises companies to segment their systems whenever possible to prevent hackers from
gaining access to all the company's private information.
