CHERRY MARKETING INSTITUTE
SWD research a top priority for cherry growers

The 2019 spring will be one for the
record books. Winter held on for a long
time this year and our northern Michigan
growers experienced a long-delayed
spring. Nighttime temperatures were cold
and as of June 1 most of the state did not
hit 80 degrees for a daytime high.
We here at Cherry Marketing Institute
(CMI) just wrapped up our winter and
spring meetings. In March, the board
funded the production research funding
for the 2019 season. We never seem to
have enough money to go around so we
have aggressively worked to secure Project
GREEEN funding, a second round of
ROAR funding from the Foundation
for Food and Agriculture Research
and the Farm Bill Specialty Crop Block
Grant funding through the Michigan
Department of Agriculture and Rural
Development. Spotted wing drosophila
(SWD) research remains a top research
priority for the cherry industry and
finding the resources we need to cover
key projects is job No. 1. CMI allocated
over $55,000 directly to SWD research
this year and remains committed to
continue to partner with as many funding
sources as possible to find new ways to
control this invasive pest.
New this year is a project led by John
Wise from Michigan State University to
develop a new model for SWD that we can
run on Enviroweather. While it is early in
the process, technology and access to new
decision-making tools is key to the future.
I am excited about this project and how
it might help growers take some of the
guesswork out of SWD management.
All in all, the industry funded $141,000
in research projects this year and we
appreciate all the great proposals that
were submitted and wished we could
fund more.
Trade has been a hot-button issue here
at CMI as we have worked closely with
the industry on a few different fronts.
Cherries, both sweet and tart, are importsensitive
crops and making sure that our
trade negotiators are aware of that was a
priority for us this past winter. The dried
cherry processors pushed back and filed
a countervailing duty and dumping case
against Turkey on April 23, and on June
6, the International Trade Commission
made a unanimous affirmative preliminary
injury determination. This means the
investigation on dried tart cherries
from Turkey will continue at the U.S.
Department of Commerce and the
International Trade Commission.
While we still have a long way to go, we
remain optimistic that the industry will
bring this to a successful conclusion.
Meanwhile, CMI worked to have
cherries added to Section 8E so that the
Cherry Industry Administrative Board
can set grade standards that imports will
have to meet in the future. This is a new
tool that the industry will have in their
toolbox in the future.
On the marketing side, things continue
to come together around the marketing
research that was funded last year.
This marketing research is driving our
marketing program this year and to date
is working very well for us. Several big
shifts are in the works for this next year. I
will talk more about that next month.
In closing this month, I want to

congratulate Jim Laubach who is this
year's " Industry Person of the Year "
recipient. Jim has worked closely with the
cherry industry since the early 1980s. Jim
has spent his career on growers' farms
working with them to implement IPM
programs. He was a pioneer, an innovator,
but most of all a partner who went
the extra mile for the cherry industry.
Congratulations, Jim! FGN
