A YEAR LIKE

NO OTHER

your marine market resource

In my entire career, I have to say that this has been a year
like no other. The big impact of course has been COVID19 and the global pandemic.
This really arrived with little warning and has become
an unimaginable agent of change. Many people have
been hurt with workplaces shut down and product shortages of many types. Oddly, but understandably, boating has
been a beneficiary of social distancing and last season, boats of
all types and ages were selling like crazy. Many people tried boating for
the first time and that is good. But, many of those people had no boating
background and our job in the industry now, is to help these new boaters
to find educational resources to help them be safe, and we hope, to remain
boaters for life.
A good place for these new boaters to see boats and learn about boating
would have been the boat shows this winter, but due to COVID-19, virtually all shows and other large gatherings have been cancelled.
At Canadian Yachting Media, we are addressing this with a new reader
focus in our editorial plan. The beginnings of this new direction appear in
this December 2020 issue with our Holiday Gift Guide and editorial on
the Latest in Marine Electronics.
I have to confess that the stress of the pandemic has shown a little in
our work. A few errors have crept in. When we wrote up the new powerboat models from Jeanneau in the October issue, I somehow got the
image of the previous NC 795, not Jeanneau's new NC 795 Series 2. See
the correct new model here in the digital version of the magazine;
https://www.nxtbook.com/kerrwil/canadianyachting/october2020/index.php#/p/26
Then, in the article " Powerplay " by Craig Ritchie, on page 44 of the
June issue, the author indicates that steady power for a battery bank is
12.1 volts. One of our many, very knowledgeable CPS-ECP readers, Bert
de Vry pointed out our error. Craig Ritchie wrote, Thanks very much for
your email Mr. de Vry, and for your sharp eyes. Of course you're absolutely correct - a 12-volt battery at full charge should show 12.6/12.7
volts, not the 12.1 as indicated in the article.
Another battery related error found it's way into Andrew McDonald's
Winterizing feature in the October issue where the author says on page
54, " Theoretically a disconnected battery will have the same charge once
connected in the spring as it does when put in storage in the fall " . Again,
Bert de Vry spotted the error pointing out that the difference between a
fully charged battery and a discharged one is only 1.1 volt (12.6-11.5) and
that you will not have a fully charged battery in the spring unless you do
something about it.
My. De Vry writes, " It is strongly recommended that batteries be
removed from the boat and stored in a suitable location at home (workshop, garage). In the 8-month winter storage period it is recommended
that you check the voltage and liquid level (for flooded batteries) every 2
months. Depending on the result you can connect a charger and bring it
back up to 100%. "
