Fall 2021 Echo - 11

An operating room inside a
Hiinga-developed 100-bed
hospital in Uganda that
serves primarily mothers
and children
the daughter of a former Ugandan president,
saw in Andy great potential and urged him to
commit more fully to his studies. At Makerere,
with the guidance of the student ministry,
Andy committed his life to Jesus and met his
wife, Sonia (Nakato '17) Agaba.
Uganda has been plagued by unemployment,
which is currently at an alarming rate of 83%
among 18- to 35-year-olds. Andy dreamed of
investing in entrepreneurship and job creation
in Uganda, specifically by funding small and
medium-sized businesses to create jobs and
develop what he terms a " strategic solution to
a systemic problem. " Microenterprises, which
qualify for microfinance, are largely focused
on survival, and being small scale, don't pay
taxes or create jobs. Large corporations, which
qualify for bank loans, employ relatively few.
Small and medium businesses, too large
for microfinance and too small for bank
loans, are twin engines of job creation and
the establishment of a middle class. Andy
identified the dearth of small and medium
businesses in Uganda as the " missing middle. "
It was this gap, this lack of small and medium
businesses, that Andy intended to fill.
Along the path to this goal, Andy was
connected with a former LBC | Capital trustee.
Upon hearing of Andy's dream, the trustee
connected Andy with Hope International,
which provides discipleship, training, places to
save and loans in underserved nations, and to
Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary &
Graduate School. Amidst the financial crisis of
2008, LBC | Capital welcomed Andy and Sonia
to Lancaster.
Sonia speaks fondly of her time here, sharing
that " people rallied around [them]. " With the
gracious support of then-President Dr. Peter
W. Teague, Colleen Noel, Manager of Student
Services for Capital Seminary & Graduate
School, and others, the Agabas were able to
secure housing and jobs as well as earn their
masters degrees in Clinical Mental Health
Counseling.
Through a miraculous provision of funding,
Andy started Hiinga in 2012. Hiinga's approach
is threefold and holistic, a reflection of Andy's
educational and spiritual background: it
enrolls potential entrepreneurs in a " mini-MBA "
program, training them to be investment
ready; it provides capital, engaging in a
rigorous process of deploying loans for
operational and growing businesses; and
it provides mentorship of entrepreneurs to
be " marketplace kingdom-makers " who see
no distinction between the " secular and the
divine. "
Hiinga works across multiple sectors in
Uganda, financing more than 100 small
and medium businesses in manufacturing,
agribusiness, restaurant and hospitality,
education and, most recently, healthcare.
Hiinga's work has secured employment
for 2,000 people, creating indirect benefits
for thousands more. It has also funded 45
schools, impacting 100,000 students. Three
years ago, Hiinga developed a healthcare
division and recently completed the
construction of a 100-bed hospital in Uganda,
devoted primarily to mothers and children.
Amazingly, this hospital treated 9,000 patients
in its first 45 days. Next year, Hiinga plans to
break ground on a 150-bed hospital with an
attached nursing school to train " good nurses
who will preach the gospel, " Andy reports.
Currently, Andy travels extensively, sharing
Hiinga's vision and engaging with donors,
and he advises his team in Uganda regarding
investments. Sonia, as Andy's prayer warrior
and cheerleader, prays for safety and favor
for Andy and for God's provision. One
cannot help but catch their vision for and
faith in God's tangible work in people's lives,
particularly those in Uganda.
When I ask Andy for his message for Christians
in the West, his response is one of conviction,
emphatically directed to those involved in
business: " Pay attention to the global south.
God is doing a great thing. Go where God is
moving. Reclaim the marketplace in Africa. "
