The Midwest Sign Assn. has named Shawn Green (Green Sign Co.; Greensburg, IN) its 2012 president after elections in October. The association’s executive committee will also include John Yarger (North American Signs; South Bend, IN) as vice president, and Greg Beyerl (Sign Craft Industries, Indianapolis) and Dan Crannie (Signs by Crannie; Flint, MI) as Gardner secretaries. Skip Gardner, the former CEO of Gardner Signs (Toledo, OH) received MSA’s Distinguished Service award. Gardner became involved with Associated Sign Industries of Ohio, a precursor to the MSA, in 1971, and would later become its president. He was also the chairman of the National Electric Sign Assn. (now the International Sign Assn.) board. and interior design. All contestants used ContraVision® media. Grand prize winner Omnigraphics (Mt. Eden, Auckland, NZ) created a mega-billboard on an office building in downtown Auckland for the Rugby World Cup, featuring the event’s slogan: “The World’s Here to Play.” Omnigraphics used the company’s Performance™ WBPRG30, a polymeric, perforated window film with 30% transparency. The building was one part of an advertising campaign for the event. ContraVision Announces Wrap Artist Winners ContraVision (Stockport, Cheshire, UK) has announced the winners of its Wrap Artists™ competition. See-through graphics competitors from around the globe entered four main categories: building wraps, vehicle wraps, POP In Memoriam Mark Allen Mark Allen, 50, died on December 3 after an eight-month battle with lung cancer. Allen began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator creating t-shirt graphics for colleges and rock bands in 1980. Later, his work appeared in campaigns for Cingular, Nokia, 7-Eleven and MasterCard, among many others. As the creative director for Multicam® Inc. (Dallas), he designed the company’s website and marketing materials, and, most recently, its 2011 greeting card. NCCCO Offers Crane-Inspector Certification The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) and Crane Certification Assn. of America (CCAA) have launched a national, crane-inspector certification program with separate certifications for mobile, tower and overhead cranes. A 45-member task force representing the NCCCO, CCAA and various industries collaborated to create the program, which allows people with five years of crane-related experience to become certified in crane inspection. Experiential requirements include positions as a crane inspector, operator, mechanic, technician or shop foreman, as well as related education (two years of education count as one year of practical experience). Bobby W. Mitchell Bobby W. Mitchell, 69, who began working in the sign industry in Columbus, OH, in 1963, passed away November 8. Mitchell began his career at Rite Way sweeping floors. Later, he worked closely with his brother, Tom Branham, of Branham Sign (Reynoldsburg, OH), and quickly progressed in the industry. In addition, Mitchell owned and operated Accurate Signs Inc., a wholesale sign-construction company. Although Accurate closed in the 1990s, Mitchell remained an advocate for the sign industry until his death. 84 SIGNS OF THE TIMES / JANUARY 2012
