MORE THAN A CENTuRY AFTER IT wAS FIRST “DISCOVERED” BY VICTORIAN-ERA
English tourists, the sundrenched French Riviera is still synonymous with leisure, luxury and glamour.
The stretch of Mediterranean coastline between Marseille and Monaco brings to mind fuschia
bougainvilleas cascading over weathered stone walls, fortified hilltop towns perched above olive
groves, and long, languid lunches next to sapphire bays. To fully experience la belle vie in these five
resort towns, each imbued with its own character, rent a villa and venture out daily from your home
base to immerse yourself in the scents, sounds and flavors of Provence.
Hyères
Nestled in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean
not too far from Toulon, Hyères is one of the
oldest resort areas on the Riviera. Date palms line
avenues of Belle Époque mansions, and ochre
houses capped with clay-tile roofs cluster around
the 12th-century St. Blaise tower in the ancient
quarter of Old Town. The “double” Giens
peninsula nearby, with its exquisite beaches,
coastal footpath, fertile vineyards and a bird
sanctuary, juts into the cerulean Mediterranean,
enticing nature and watersports lovers to explore
this slice of Provence.

st. tropez
The legendary resort of St. Tropez was a magnet
for the original Jet Set back in the 1960s. The
town, set against the backdrop of the Esterel
Mountains, is where film stars like Brigitte Bardot
frolicked on golden beaches in search of the
perfect tan. The see-and-be-seen hot spot,
Europe’s equivalent of the Hamptons or South
Beach, has never gone out of fashion. Cool hotels,
hip restaurants and a no-holds-barred nightlife
draw hordes of beautiful people. But the town still
manages to retain more than a few traces of its
provençal heritage. An alfresco lunch overlooking
the sea at La Terrasse is an ideal way to soak up
some of the mystique, not to mention delicious
seafood and a glass of crisp Côtes de Provence.
Cannes
Cannes is forever identified with the world’s
most famous film festival, and the spell lingers
long after the stars leave in May. Amble along
the Boulevard de la Croisette, the promenade
overlooking Cannes’ famous beach and the La
Napoule Gulf.
Stride out to Pointe de la Croisette, at the tip
of the peninsula; stroll through the morning
flower market at Allées de la Liberté; and
wander through Le Suquet, the old quarter. An
