et in 1940, soon after the outbreak of World War II,
Darkest Hour examines the circumstances surrounding
Winston Churchill's ascent to power, and his relentless
push toward engaging the enemy at all costs and abolishing
the notion of surrender. The production afforded actor Gary
Oldman - essentially unrecognizable in the prosthetics and
costuming that transformed him into the British prime minister - the opportunity to deliver some of Churchill's most
famous speeches from the despatch box in the House of
Commons. It also offered director Joe Wright and cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, ASC, AFC the challenge of capturing a time of near cataclysm for Western Europe, with grim
and gripping events unfolding in the springtime sun and deep
beneath the streets of London.
An alumnus of the Sorbonne, Delbonnel started behind
the camera in the early 1980s, earning his earliest credits as a
writer and camera operator on short films directed by Jean-
