JUST IN

Serving Trans Students
A recent cover story in Time magazine is one of the
latest examples of how transgender issues are coming
to the forefront. The article points to high-profile
persons such as Laverne Cox, who portrays Sophia
Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black;
the first transgender homecoming queen, Cassidy
Lynn Campbell (crowned at Marina High School in
Huntington Beach, California, in 2013); and the first
transgender homecoming king (Ray Ramsey was
crowned at Concord High School in New Hampshire
in 2013).
Campus housing, as is often the case, reflects
these societal issues, and conversations are being
held on several campuses about how to best serve
transgender students. Here are some of the resources
ACUHO-I offers when asked about transgender
students and accommodations:
* Creating a Trans-Inclusive Housing Program
is a webinar originally presented on April 25,
2013, that was organized by the ACUHO-I LGBT
Issues Network and presented by Genny Beemyn,
director of the Stonewall Center at the University
of Massachusetts, Amherst. The webinar discusses
the best practices for being and becoming a
welcoming campus for transgender students.
Included with the webinar recording is a checklist
that can be used for quick reference.
* Not Your Mom's Transgender 101: The Advanced
Session for Passionate Professionals, Eileen Hail,
2013 Annual Conference & Exposition. Hail
explains the differences between gender identity,
gender expression, biological sex, and sexual
orientation and provides resources for further
research.
There are more items available in the library (http://
www.acuho-i.org/library); find them by searching
"transgender."

PD for Free:

Podcasts on the Go
With advances in technology and our perpetual access to
information, professional development opportunities are
literally available at our fingertips. To maximize the time we can
spend on furthering our professional knowledge and practice,
sometimes we need to get creative. Podcasts are a great way to
add "on-the-go" professional development to your repertoire.
Tom Krieglstein, founder of the Student Affairs Collective
and #SAChat, shares some insights on using podcasts for
professional development in student affairs. "Podcasts are
pre-recorded audio files that can be accessed at any time by a
listener through their computer or mobile device." Podcasts
can contribute to professional development for student affairs
practitioners for two main reasons. "First, everyone has three
learning channels (visual, auditory, and kinetic). I happen to
learn well through listening, so having a podcast playing in my
ear helps. Secondly, often I'm on the go between places, and
listening to something is the only option I have, as I can't read a
blog or book while walking or driving."
For those who commute to work, downloading a selection of
student affairs-related podcasts is a great way to maximize your
time in the car, on public transport, or walking across campus.
For those new to using podcasts as a form of professional
development, Krieglstein offers this advice: "Many don't know
how to get started with listening, or subscribing, to a podcast.
The easiest way is to subscribe, for free, through iTunes. From
there, each new episode of the podcast will be automatically
downloaded to your mobile device."
To help get you started, Krieglstein recommends the following
channels that offer podcasts with good student affairs material:
* The Student Affairs Spectacular features podcasts on
everything from digital identity development to job
search stories and offers new material weekly: http://
studentaffairscollective.org/the-student-affairs-spectacularpodcast.
* Life Work Balances offers podcasts dedicated to
conversations with and stories told by people who work
with college students. The goal of these podcasts is to help
remind folks to take a break, relax, and learn some new ways
to relieve stress and have some fun. New episodes are posted
every Wednesday morning: https://itunes.apple.com/us/
podcast/life-work-balances/id508995717?mt=2.
