City of Goleta
Community engagement is important to the City. In 2018,
the City's first Public Engagement Commission was appointed to address specific topics such as Council compensation,
Council meeting start times, the concept of a charter city,
and the term of mayor. They also provide input for reaching
out to a greater number of residents. Of the seven appointed
commissioners, one is a youth appointee who provides a
unique perspective.
In 2019, the City launched LEAD Goleta-the City's first
community academy, for residents to LEARN EMPOWER
ADVOCATE and DISCUSS Goleta issues. The inaugural
group of 25 residents learned about the different components of local government and how to become more involved
with the City.

LIFE IS GOOD IN THE GOODL AND.
Goleta was incorporated in 2002 and sits near the coast of
Central California. Our City's eight square miles are nestled
between the Santa Ynez Mountains and Pacific Ocean, offering unparalleled scenic beauty. More than 28,000 people live
in Goleta, and many more commute to work here. The City
is on the cutting edge of the entrepreneurial business community. For a small city, there are lots of large, well-known
companies who make their home in Goleta, and new entrepreneurs are popping up each year.
The City is governed by a five-member, elected City Council.
As a General Law City, it has a Council-Manager form of government. This is the system of local government that combines the political leadership of elected officials in the form
of a Council with the managerial experience of an appointed
local government manager. The Goleta City Council serves
as a legislative body. In 2018, residents voted for the first
directly-elected Mayor to serve a two-year term, whereas
previously, the Mayor was selected for a one-year term by the
other Council members.

Another popular event in Goleta is the Dam Dinner, which
started in 2012, will be held for the on August 17, 2019,
from 5-7 p.m. The idea for the event was hatched at a Love
of Goleta workshop in which participants shared what they
love about our City and brainstormed on how to further create community. Every year at this event, people share a meal
(either homemade or purchased from a local food truck) at
the Lake Los Carneros Dam, a picturesque spot in Goleta.
Since its inaugural event in 2012, the dinner has grown to
over 400 people. This casual event brings people of all ages
out to get to know one another over dinner, live music and
a good time.

Goleta's newest park, Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park,
opened with great fanfare in the spring of 2019 and includes
a number of exciting amenities including a skate plaza,
multi-purpose field, basketball court, handball court, concrete ping-pong tables, bocce ball court, pickleball court,
Bankshot basketball court (the first of its kind on the west
coast!), walking path, picnic areas, fitness nodes and more!
This four-acre park tucked into Old Town Goleta is the City's
largest public park.
