Intermodal Is on a
Positive Path in 2018
I
ntermodal is on track for another strong performance in 2018, with projected growth of
around 5 percent year-over-year, after recording a particularly robust first quarter.
Frank Adcock, assistant vice president with TTX, chronicled
the reasons for the upbeat forecast at the opening General Session, "Year in Review," on May 2 at IANA's Operations & Maintenance Business Meeting in Lombard, Illinois.
"There is plenty of good news for the North American economy. All arrows are pointing up - really, really high," he said, citing
increased investment driven by recent federal tax cut legislation
and higher consumer spending.
The booming economy and the electronic logging device
mandate that has squeezed over-the-road trucking capacity have
combined to help fuel intermodal growth on the domestic side so
far this year, in concert with notable improvement in the international sector linked to increased trade activity, Adcock said.
Domestic intermodal climbed 7.4 percent year-over-year
in the first quarter of 2018, including 14.5 percent more trailer
shipments. International intermodal rose 7 percent on that basis.
Volume for the quarter was slightly higher for international than
domestic freight.

The early 2018 results and the forecast for the year appear to
indicate there could be another all-time record, as compared with
the 17.9 million intermodal units that were moved last year to set
the existing top mark.
