Trucking Industry Outlook
Q2 2015 saw a continuation of
trends that began to become apparent
earlier in the year. Although the economy grew very slowly in Q1, demand for
truck transportation remained relatively
strong. Now, although it appears that
economic growth has resumed, the
changing complexion of the recovery is
tilting towards the consumer. There are
concerns that each point of economic
growth in the consumer side of the
economy (i.e. heavy in services) generates less freight than equivalent growth
in the industrial sector.
After a prolonged period of very
tight capacity culminating in 2014, truck
capacity utilization has settled back
into stability at around 95%. While still
tight by historical standards, this level
of utilization is reasonably manageable
and shippers are generally able to find
capacity where and when they need it.
We continue to regard current conditions as "the calm before the storm" as
tightening capacity will return beginning
