All in all, total intermodal volumes
are expected to rise 2.5-3.5% in
2017. At first glance, this may seem
like solid growth, however intermodal
needs to gain 2.1% just to cancel
out 2016's decline and be level with
2015's volumes. Intermodal gained
3.3% in the first half of 2017, so
it is more than likely that markets
will beat the 2.1% hurdle in 2017.
International loads may continue to
lead overall intermodal through the
end of the year based on the strength
of container imports. But at some
point in late 2017 or early 2018,
international growth may slow and if
this happens, domestic intermodal
will need to show larger gains in
order to maintain overall intermodal
growth patterns.

The first chart shows volume for key lane groupings: Transcon Eastbound,
Transcon Westbound, North-South and East-West. It is also indexed to the first
quarter in the period. The transcon lanes are defined by movement between
coastal regions (the Northeast, Southeast and Eastern Canada on the east coast
and the Northwest, Southwest and Western Canada on the west coast). The
North-South and East-West lanes encompass freight in both directions, excluding
the transcon lanes. North-South (a shorter haul, more truck competitive lane)
saw volume dip below East-West traffic due to lower fuel prices and higher truck
capacity. Transcon in both directions has turned up slightly. East-West traffic

2003

Trailers increased in both Q1 and
Q2. However, Q2's 3.9% increase in
trailer volumes comes on top of a
28.6% decline in Q2 of 2016. This
year's trailer strength is most likely
due to extremely weak comparisons.
In any case, trailers now have little
influence on overall intermodal
growth. In the second quarter,
less than 7.0% of all intermodal
shipments were trailers.

This section explains the charts that describe key long-term trends in
intermodal volume. These charts have been a continuing feature of Intermodal
Market Trends and Statistics for several years now. With each report, these trends
are updated by tracking the trailing 12 months - e.g. the 12 months ending in
June of 2017, and so forth.

INDEX: YEAR ENDING Q2 2003=1

Domestic container growth
improved from Q1 to Q2, giving
some hope for market improvement.
Trucking conditions have tightened
slightly pushing more freight to rail,
however, much of the increase in
domestic containers is probably due
to transloading. Domestic container
volumes did better in Western regions
where transloading is more prevalent
and less well in the U.S. East where
intermodal faces more competition
from trucking. Domestic container
traffic should strengthen in the
second half of the year if diesel
prices and trucking regulations
tighten.

Intermodal Long-Term Trends

AVEG. LENGTH OF HAUL (MILES)

expected to be healthy in the second
half of 2017, which should bode well for
international volumes.
